On Wednesday, 23 October 2024, Basic Rights Queensland (BRQ) hosted its Annual General Meeting (AGM), bringing together staff, volunteers, and supporters to celebrate a year of incredible achievements and reflect on the positive impact BRQ continues to have in the community.

The highlight of the event was stories of impact from BRQ’s dedicated team members, showcasing the real change their work has created. From expanding our disability discrimination practice to increasing our reach in North Queensland, each presentation highlighted how BRQ is breaking barriers and transforming lives. WWQ senior lawyer Samarah Kerr provided insights into the power of partnerships, and solicitor Katie Tighe reflected on the success of our mental health services. Discrimination expert Jake Sheehan shared how BRQ is advocating for disability rights, while social security lawyer Nali Wardill spoke of the life-changing victories achieved through Centrelink’s Advocates Channel. Senior industrial advocate Tneka Springett shared the exciting expansion of BRQ’s services into North Queensland, ensuring that more communities have access to essential legal support, while senior WWQ lawyer Alice Chester highlighted the profound impact of BRQ’s casework, showcasing how advocacy and legal intervention are changing lives across the state.These stories of resilience and justice remind us of the vital role BRQ plays in the lives of Queensland’s most vulnerable communities.

In her President’s Report, Claire Moore expressed pride in BRQ’s growth and the organization’s unwavering commitment to fairness, especially in the face of rising demand and the cost-of-living crisis. She celebrated the expansion of Working Women Queensland (WWQ) and BRQ’s influence in shaping legislative changes to support women in the workplace. Claire’s words underscored the passion driving BRQ’s work, making it clear that every step forward is a step toward justice.

CEO James Farrell, though new to the role, highlighted BRQ’s long-standing commitment to social justice. He shared powerful stories from clients like Natalie and Priyanka, whose lives have been changed by BRQ’s advocacy and legal services. These stories illustrate the heart of BRQ’s mission: ensuring fairness, dignity, and hope for those facing systemic barriers.

The financial report, presented by Treasurer Connor Wrench, reinforced BRQ’s strong position for the future. With growing funding streams and a surplus of $71,000, BRQ is poised to continue its vital work, expanding services and deepening its impact across Queensland.

As the AGM concluded with the re-election of the Management Committee, attendees reflected on BRQ’s achievements with optimism and excitement for the future. The evening closed with a sense of shared purpose, as BRQ looks ahead to another year of advancing social justice and empowering those who need it most.
